Home Battery: Worth It After 2027?

With net metering ending in 2027, home batteries become more interesting. But is it profitable for your situation? Discover the pros and cons and calculate your payback time.

The big question: Is a home battery worth it?

A home battery costs between €4,000 and €10,000 depending on capacity. The payback time depends on your solar panels, consumption pattern, and energy contract type.

When is a home battery worth it?

You have many solar panels and high export

If you produce significantly more than you consume, you lose money on low feed-in tariffs after 2027. A battery stores that excess energy for your own use.

You have a dynamic energy contract

With a dynamic contract, your battery can smart-charge during cheap hours and discharge during expensive peak moments. This adds extra savings on top of self-consumption.

You want more independence from the grid

A battery increases your energy independence. With the right setup, you can use 60-80% of your own solar energy instead of 30-40%.

When is a home battery NOT (yet) worth it?

You have low export

If you already use most of your solar energy directly, there is little to store. The investment is then hard to recoup.

Battery prices are still declining

Battery prices have dropped significantly in recent years and this trend continues. Waiting until 2027 may be more advantageous, unless you already have high export.

You have low consumption

With low annual consumption, the absolute savings are smaller, making the payback period longer. Calculate first whether it makes sense for your situation.

What changes in 2027?

Net metering ends completely on January 1, 2027. This has major consequences for solar panel owners:

Without battery after 2027

With a fixed contract, you receive only ~€0.0025/kWh net for exported electricity, while paying €0.30/kWh for import. The difference can add up to €300-600 per year.

With battery after 2027

You store excess solar energy and use it in the evening. This increases your self-consumption from ~35% to 65-80%, so you have less export at low tariffs.
